Falling into Winter

Love those colours…

anujas19's avatarMy_Endeavors

The leaves crunch under my feet

Creating that ever-so-satisfying sound that I treasure

The fall breeze caresses my wild curls

as I hug myself to keep warm

The sky is a variety of soft, autumn colors–

orange, to blue, and finally to purple

Trees gently dance in the breeze,

swaying this way and that,

gradually marking winter’s arrival

but not without the presence of

warm bonfires, the aroma of apple cinnamon

and loved ones smiling right beside you

How to Write a Sonnet

qwiklit's avatarQwiklit

The sonnet is perhaps the most misinterpreted style of poetry in the English language. For too long, it has been associated with Shakespearean dandyism and caricatures of half-witted Don Juans trying to woo their lovers with pithy flower metaphors. This myopic view has prevented many aspiring poets from honing their craft and incorporating structure to their unstructured verse. I’m here today to teach you how to write a sonnet, but I also want to explain how it can be beneficial for the average writer–and even the non-poet–to use the sonnet as a training ground for keeping ideas sound and cohesive.

The Italian Trip

There were two things I cherished from the Italian trip. One was the marvellous sight from the hotel balcony, of scores of Catholic priests dressed in black boarding coaches to take them to the Vatican. Then their spectacular return, dressed in Bishop’s deepest purple, as the settling dusk was busy painting the sky a similar hue.
The next day a smaller groups of purple clad Bishops left to return hours later in the most startling scarlet of the Cardinal’s robes. This was a heart stopping sight for our group who were on the terrace taking in the evening aiWe were told that Cardinal red represented the blood of Christ, the Bishop’s purple royalty and the priests black poverty.
The other thing I treasured was the advice of the moustached elderly guide who took us around the city of Rome. Flourishing his furled navy umbrella aloft he advised “Always make eye contact with the man whose car you are about to cross in front of, as he is less likely to run you over that way      Featured image           Featured image
